Stocking up.

This week we'll be stocking up on flies.  Come on out to "the 'rents' place" and we'll whip up some goodies... Whether you're new or old, we'll sit around and tie up some favorites, some oldies, some newbies, and hopefully some stock for the upcoming fall run of BIG fish.

Our location will be the kitchen table at 684 Hinchey Rd.  When?  7am this Saturday, the 14th of September.

By the way, the reports about staging fish are all over; they're just waiting for a drop in temps and increase in flows...  Bring on all things fall!

Scouting Sandy...

Join us this Saturday for a little pre-run scouting in Sandy Creek!

We'll meet at the Rt. 19 bridge in Hamlin; here's a map.  Take your poppers, your buggers, bass flies, pike leader, and a sandwich.  Hey, sandwiches make fishing that much better...

And if you're new, no worries... maybe bring a sandwich and a side of patience.

Since it's kind of a drive, we'll meet at 7:30am to give Tory a chance to wake up.   :)

Caught fish.

Yep. Everyone caught fish. And not just one or two. I'd say a good time was had by all, even if the biggest fish was less than 12 inches long. Here's a few pics of our latest outing to Black Creek...

Brian the Great.  This guy has style.

Chris.  New recruit.  Thanks, Suzanne.

Overview... beautiful day, eh?

Cute rock bass.  Again:  nice, Brain.

Tory's concentrated look.

A couple of the guys showing up last Saturday had never fished with a fly rod.  A couple minutes into casting, they both had fish on.  That's good stuff.  So...

We welcome any and every.  Let's fish.

Back to Warm water.

Okay, kids, we've had enough 50-degree water to be good for a couple weeks.  This Saturday we'll aim to hit some warm water fish species and hopefully connect with some much less discrimintory fish.  We're talking sunfish.  We're talking bass.  We're talking carp (okay, so carp on a fly is not exactly high class, but it's not exactly easy, either).  The plan?  Meet at the Black Creek spillway in Churchville at 7am.  Here's a google map. I'll steal someone's old canoe so Tory can paddle around above the spillway and pursue that pike he's holding a grudge against.  Below the spillway we can pick off any number of species of warm water fish.  Worms if you like, San Juan or otherwise.  Gaudy buggers, streamers, poppers, you name it.  Let's catch fish.

clear and cold...

Spring Creekage. Clear, cold, beautiful, ...elusive.

and the water was,...

Good Will, attempting to tie on the perfect fly for these elitist fish.

...for those of us without waders, extra crisp.

Even Tory's underbridge loops couldn't entice 18-inch brown trout.  Big Dan was the winner with a vibrant and feisty little trout.  Perhaps we'll come back to Spring Creek... with waders and smaller flies.   Cheers!

the fussy browns

...last-second planning.  Nothing like it.

Tomorrow morning, early-ish.  7:00am, Spring Creek in Caledonia.  Here is a map..  We'll park in the parking lot by "Zantopia Herb Gardens" near the tracks on Main Street.  Another map.

Bring your smallest flies and lightest tippet; these guys are fussy and the water is clear.  ...and cold.  Waders or thick skin is a must.

back to the ponds..

...the ponds at Mendon.  Sunfish, sunfish, sunfish, perhaps carp, perhaps bass, perhaps a stray prowling pike...  The enthusiastic goodness of Tory will be your host this Thursday, August 22 at approximately 3pm until approximately 6pm.  He'll start at the Pond View shelter at the end of Pond View Road in Mendon Ponds Park.  You can view the park map here.

And further, upon request, here's a pic of the brown trout snatched with a small black nymph at our last outing at Oatka Creek in the town of Scottsville...

Prospective outings on Saturday morning (Aug. 24) this week include Spring Creek in Mumford, Oatka Creek in Scottsville (park section), or perhaps a local westside pond like Pineway Ponds Park in Spencerport, or even Black Creek in Churchville.

Any suggestions?  Requests?  :)

Next up...

Oatka Creek summer-fishing..  wading in shorts, solving the finicky trout puzzle... hopefully not too much flow...

Planning to try it this Friday at 2:30pm, here, at Canawaugus Park, in Scottsville, NY.  ...we may switch spots from there.

the good stuff.

Results from Thursday's gig in Mendon Ponds?  ...new fish stories, a new fly fisherman, and some great hang-out time.

A pretty awesome day to be out on the water, complete with a live band in a nearby shelter.

Hopefully coming up soon, we'll be posting some tips on fishing and fly-tying... for those newbies or those who aren't so newby...

Come fishing with us!

  • Pond View shelter, just off Hopkins Point Rd in Mendon Ponds Park in Mendon, NY.  We'll look for sunfish and panfish, and perhaps we'll hop into a floating something and chuck poppers and large messy flies out at weed beds, looking for large predatory monsters.

If it rains, we'll retreat to the shelter or some other cover and tie flies.

How to find us? Look for the goofy-looking dude in the cowboy hat. (See pic to the right... there may or may not be a cute little kid in a backpack...)

And remember, little people under the age of 16 need no license to fish! :)

time:  4:30 or so until the mosquitoes eat us alive

    Cheers!
